OVERVIEW 

Top surgery can help FTM patients feel more comfortable and authentic in social and professional situations, knowing their appearance matches their gender identity. Our team at Fulcrum Aesthetics in Chicago is honored to work with transmasculine and nonbinary patients seeking to achieve a flat, toned upper body profile that reflects their innate attractiveness and individuality.

PROCEDURE  

During surgery, Dr. Hill will choose one of two incision types. For patients with minimal breast tissue to remove, he can use a periareolar incision that wraps around the nipple. In this case, scarring will be imperceptible, as it is well-camouflaged by the darker skin pigment in the region. The alternative is to create two incisions – one stretching from the nipple down to the breast crease and the second traveling horizontally along the inframammary fold. This is the ideal approach for patients with a moderate to significant amount of breast tissue to be excised. Other incision options include a keyhole pattern or an anchor pattern. Dr. Hill will choose the ideal approach for your unique needs and goals.

RECOVERY

After FTM top surgery, you will be fitted with a specialized dressing that needs to remain in place for the first week after surgery. This will protect the nipple graft as it heals. Dr. Hill may place drains in the chest to help flush out any excess blood and fluids from the area. You may encounter swelling, bruising, and soreness in the chest; however, these symptoms can be controlled through the use of pain medications prescribed by Dr. Hill. Take care not to do any major lifting for the first seven days. This includes picking up anything heavier than 5 lbs. You will need to wait around 3-6 weeks before you can resume strenuous exercise and weight-lifting. Dr. Hill will remain on call should any questions or concerns arise during your recovery period.

OVERVIEW

PROCEDURE

While estrogen hormone therapy can help increase breast size to a certain degree, many patients feel their transition is more complete after undergoing top surgery with implants or fat transfer. Patients pursuing implant augmentation can choose from silicone or saline implants. Dr. Hill will create chest capsules to house the implants and will then insert them through one of several incision choices tailored to the patient’s needs and aesthetic preferences. With fat transfer augmentation, fat cells are extracted via liposuction from areas of excess, such as thighs, belly, or hips. Once the fat has been purified and sterilized, it is strategically injected into the chest to create more rounded, feminine breast mounds.

RECOVERY

Recovery after breast augmentation with implants can take several weeks. You may experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the chest, symptoms that can be well-managed with prescription pain medications and compression garments. Dr. Hill will provide you with a personalized aftercare plan to help make your recovery journey seamless and stress-free. While you can take gentle walks right away to increase circulation and boost your mood, you should hold off on strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks.
